The Reserve – Chester Zoo

The Reserve is a new lodge resort inside Chester Zoo’s Heart of Africa zone. It opened in August 2025 and has 51 lodges, all designed to give guests a close view of the wildlife and to support the zoo’s conservation work. The whole place has a relaxed, safari-inspired feel, and the setting makes it pretty memorable.

We were asked to help with some of the key interior areas, mainly focusing on materials that could cope with a lot of foot traffic without losing the look the designers wanted. In the main reception building, about 450 square metres of engineered wood went in, finished with a specialist oil so it holds up under constant use. For the bar, toilets and kitchen areas, porcelain tiles were the better fit, so those were specified instead.

Each lodge ended up with its own mix of tiles from our ranges, chosen to suit the tone of the interiors. One of the details people tend to notice is the copper bath outside each lodge. Guests can sit out there, drink in hand, look over the savannah and take in the textures and finishes around them. It’s a small moment, but it shows how much the material choices influence the atmosphere of the whole resort.
